Scaling up Magnetically Induced Catalysis for CO₂ Reduction

The POWER CO₂ Days! | September 7–9, 2026 | Lyon, France Day 2: Advancing TRL

We are thrilled to welcome Bruno Chaudret as a Plenary Speaker to discuss the emerging and highly promising field of Magnetically Induced Catalysis (MIC).

MIC exploits magnetically active materials to trigger or enhance catalytic processes. By applying external magnetic fields, researchers can achieve localized and selective energy transfer through magnetic induction heating. These "self-heating" catalysts allow for rapid activation, precise temporal control, and significantly improved energy efficiency—making this methodology incredibly attractive for sustainable processes and energy conversion.

In his presentation, Bruno will detail the LPCNO laboratory's work on CO₂ reduction by hydrogen. The team has successfully developed selective catalytic processes for methanation, reverse water-gas shift (RWGS), and even methanol synthesis (thanks to a high-pressure 50-bar MIC setup developed with Technip).

Scaling up for industry: While initially based on magnetic nanoparticles, the team has since integrated macroscopic magnetic susceptors for scale-up and durability. Iron wool has emerged as a cheap, highly energy-efficient material. With the support of SATT TTT and Téréga, a pilot-scale system based on iron wool and Ni nanoparticles is now being used to enrich biogas into grid-ready methane.

This journey from proof-of-concept has led to 4 patents and the recent creation of the startup CATMAG (December 2025), which focuses on heterogeneous catalysis.

From the fundamentals of magnetic heating to fine chemistry applications and startup creation, this plenary will showcase the full trajectory of a groundbreaking technology. Don't miss it!
